Those are entries in /etc/inittab, it usually means that getty doesn't like the device it is associated with.
There still might be some udev issues.

It occurs to me that the udev being used may be incompatible with our kernel? Not sure about this since I use the same distro on my maple and do not have this problem.
  mapled:~ # rpm -qa udev
  udev-085-30

I'm not sure how to properly debug this, perhaps you can boot with "init=/bin/bash" and the from the prompt run:
  # /etc/init.d/boot start

that should mount and start up the udevd.
then inspect /dev/ to see if the tty's entries exist.
