MPEG-4/XVID/DVIX would be a good choice. You could use the open source Kdenlive non-linear video editor to convert the videos to MPEG-4.

I have no problems trying to watch the videos in .MTS format using VLC media player.

My concern is not the encoding format per se but rather the size of the videos (though the mplayer on Debian Lenny needed special parameters to read the MTS files),. The suggested formats is in the decrease the size, by compressing the videos further.

I will take a look today at trying to compress the videos to see what I can do. Thanks.

Stephen Spector

Hi,

I have just used the open source Kdenlive non-linear video editor to compress the .MTS video file from 1.1 GB down to about 400 MB. The encoding profile I am using is MPEG-4 2000k 1-pass.

There is no noticeable loss of video quality. If you use a lower bitrate for encoding, the filesize could be even smaller still.

Just to add, it took me 40 mins to encode MTS to MP4 using an Intel Pentium Dual Core E6300 @ 2.8 GHz processor on an Intel DQ45CB motherboard with 6 GB DDR2-800 memory.

The operating system used is Fedora 11 Linux x86_64.
