        Perhaps a compression utility might be better than compressed video?  I 
say this because it would be lossless, and it might be possible to compress it 
just as well.  I say this because I'm a fan of quality.  I suppose the original 
could be archived somewhere and all would be just as well, but in reality, I 
have to assume no one is streaming this, and if someone wants to, a low quality 
version could always be posted on youtube or something.

MPEG-4/XVID/DVIX would be a good choice. You could use the open source Kdenlive 
non-linear video editor to convert the videos to MPEG-4.

I have no problems trying to watch the videos in .MTS format using VLC media 
player.


My concern is not the encoding format per se but rather the size of the videos 
(though the mplayer on Debian Lenny needed special parameters to read the MTS 
files),. The suggested formats is in the decrease the size, by compressing the 
videos further. 

I will take a look today at trying to compress the videos to see what I can do.
