i have the same setup at work, apache is communication via tcp to mysqld
 on the gentoo maschine. It works good, but i didn't test the performance.

typo3 is based on mysql and php, so i think, that i installing two
mysqld deamons. One for mail, one for web. So i can reduce the slowness
using sockets, instead of tcp.

But the main problem is, schould i use the harddisk directly? Most
benchmaks tells, that image file are faster under xen, as partitions.
