Just black screen reverting back to "daemons_name  . . . . . [OK]"  lines
CTRL+ALT+F2 does allow text login as root.

Could you please try that option; that's the only significant change I made between xen/stable and xen/stable-2.6.32.x. None of the upstream .10 -> .11 changes seem terribly relevent.
