This is harmless, unless its immediately followed by a crash due to being 
unable to remove all shadows :)

Windows should select the MPS HAL (Halmps.dll) which is SMP capable. Have you 
tried this combination? What HAL are you seeing Windows select?

So: the crash issue you see is only with acpi=1 apic=1 pae=1 vcpus=2. How much 
memory are you giving the VM?
