I get the same problem on -unstable. I can reliably reproduce the problem whenever I start a particular set of java programs that read files on the samba mount (the smbmount grabs the files off a windows PC)

this is a 3.0.2-2 2.6.16 kernel with a RHEL3 userland (with updated module-init-tools)
