I was using root to start the xen daemon but I didn't boot into the XenLinux. Maybe that's why the xc module was not there.

The xc module failed to import because it couldn't open the command interface (that's the line ERROR:... below). After that everything trying to use xc got an error. The usual reason for this is that xend was not being run by root - if you weren't root when running 'xend start', try again as root.
