Hi people.

Hope some could help answering this thread.

I have a new server supermicro X8DTE/X8DT6 with CPU Intel E5620 which Intel say that has support for virtualization.

The BIOS have this 2 options, just one was disable by default.

Intel Virtualization Tech Enable Yes.
North bridge Chipset -> Intel VT-d enable.

I have enable this 2 settings and follow the instructions to make this change available.

I have install Xen and reboot my server, I have been reading about Xen, normally went u have a server where u want to virtualize u want to have all the features available, well I try to see if my server have the right flags for the Intel 'vmx' but I don't see that flag:

Quote:
processor : 0
vendor_id : GenuineIntel
cpu family : 6
model : 44
model name : Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5620 @ 2.40GHz
stepping : 2
cpu MHz : 1600.000
cache size : 12288 KB
physical id : 0
siblings : 1
core id : 0
cpu cores : 1
fpu : yes
fpu_exception : yes
cpuid level : 11
wp : yes
flags : fpu tsc msr pae cx8 apic mtrr cmov pat clflush acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss ht syscall nx lm constant_tsc ida arat pni est ssse3 cx16 sse4_1 sse4_2 popcnt lahf_lm
bogomips : 5987.47
clflush size : 64
cache_alignment : 64
address sizes : 40 bits physical, 48 bits virtual
power management:

This server have 24GB ram, now let me show u dmidecode:

Quote:
Now, running dmidecode I have other info:
Processor Information
Socket Designation: CPU 2
Type: Central Processor
Family: Xeon
Manufacturer: Intel
ID: C2 06 02 00 FF FB EB BF
Signature: Type 0, Family 6, Model 44, Stepping 2
Flags:

VME (Virtual mode extension)
PAE (Physical address extension)

I just put here the part that took my attention.

Now let me show u hypervisor capabilities:

Quote:

cat /sys/hypervisor/properties/capabilities
xen-3.0-x86_64 xen-3.0-x86_32p hvm-3.0-x86_32 hvm-3.0-x86_32p hvm-3.0-x86_64
This a new field for me, does this mean that my server have the capabilities but I cannot use them?

I a little confuse because I don't see the Quote:
vmx
flag.

Thanks for your time.

P.S. Xen 3.0.3.x

Your email was in my spambox, so I presume many other people will also have missed it.

Did you switch the server off and on again after enabling the VT feature in the BIOS? Just rebooting the server won't work, you physically need to switch it off. Best is to pull out the power cable.

Xen masks the flags by default. This is a security feature
