Re: [Xen-users] Do I need a dummy?

Just to say I managed to get this scenario working very satisfactorily using the instructions here:

http://docwhat.gerf.org/2008/08/xen-networking/

I don't know what made that howto work for me when others didn't and like the author I had tried to fathom it all out from books and other websites, but for some reason his explanation just clicked. And yes, I have used a dummy0 adaptor even if I didn't have to.

I had a brief problem (I hope) after getting it all working in that I couldn't seem to connect to my web VM - one of the public ones - from my desktop in the UK but could using lynx on my other physical server in the same datacentre. But I don't think that can be anything to do with Xen networking.

Cheers,

Jock

Hi all,

I managed to get all my VMs (5 in total) up and running in bridged mode with public IP addresses from my ISP. All are running Debian Etch in a Dom) of Debian Etch with Xen 3.1 using the instructions here: http://www.howtoforge.com/debian_etch_xen_3.1

But ideally I only want two of the DomUs on the public internet with the other three only on an internal network and the two public ones also connected to these so they can use databases and filestores on the private side machines. Does that make sense? I'll try and attach a PNG but if it doesn't come out in the email you can see it here:

Assuming that diagram is roughly correct I assume I need two bridges, one connected to Dom0's physical ethernet card with my two public machines attached, and one without a network connection to the outside world to which all the VMs are connected with private IP addresses and so on. And that by adding routes I can get the zimbra server to mount nfs drives say from one of the private machines or other services I don't want exposed directly to the outside world.

Searching around I find a couple of blog postings or Wiki articles saying that you don't need the "dummy0" interface any more. I'm not sure I can see how to setup a bridge without either specifying one or it defaulting to eth0. So, do I need a dummy? And if not how do I set up the bridge without?
