I tested in particular the disk performance and I noticed a decrease of I/O
throughput, while at the same time a significant decrease of the VM CPU
utilization.

So the fastest throughput you ever saw was 1.7MB/s?
What sized chunks does PassMark use?

I've not tested since -pre5, but roughly what I saw with IOmeter was this

Block random random seq seq random seq
size rd wr rd wr rd/wr rd/wr
=====  ======  ======  ======  ======  ======  =====
4KB    20MB/s  1MB/s   20MB/s  1MB/s   N/A     N/A
1MB    50MB/s  50MB/s  50MB/s  50MB/s  30MB/s  30MB/s

With two separate disks on one VM, I could get aggregate throughput of 180MB/s.
