Following up on myself... I am going to use this:

http://www.ars.de/ars/ars.nsf/docs/netio

unless someone can suggest anything better. It comes with windows and
linux binaries and appears to be dead easy to use. It also just hangs on
the Rx test when I run it using the PV drivers, which might be a clue as
to a problem...
