Hi Archie!

If You want really to deliver the best performace, is it the issue

I Agree.
But it is not a big project (in terms of complexity and investment). The main goal of the server is to run a database (on linux). Since its hardware will be a little idle, I decided to virtualize (it`s my first virtualization install out of my test lab). So, some hundred USD for just a complement function of the server would not be the case.

How heavy load do You plan to have on Windows machines, which kind
of services do You want to have there?
In really, no much load on windows. I will run just one win2003 server for 3 or 4 clients to connect via terminal service and run office, browser and ERP.
The database (firebird) and file server (samba) will run on Linux.
