Glad you managed to solve it!

That sounds like a good solution, but adding it manually to the initrd
image would also have worked, I bet. 

Since you DO NEED this module all the time, it's not bad to have it in
the kernel as a built-in, but I'm just mentioning the initrd solution
for completeness.
