I access a centos 4.4 domU all the time via ssh. What is hard to do? 
Define "difficult to exit" Do you mean it is slow? Does a :q not work? What?
I also start a vncserver manually on the centos side and use vncviewer 
to display the desktop on dom0 with great success.
