actually get the rpms for the kernel.

There are none for x86_64. You can use the tar'd binaries...

If you want, you might rpm'ify them with fakeroot, or some other method....

I created the image file and made it into an ext3 file system. The issue I
am having is how to populate the file system. Appreciate any help.

For guests, you can sort of follow the FC4 method, but you'll need to
create your own RH yum repo...

Or, rsync a minimal install into your image from a physical machine...
Or, use a Redhat clone with an Internet install repo...
