No. Using localhost (127.0.0.1) removes dom0 from the suspects (usually).
What has Firebird logged during all this?

Telnet 127.0.0.1 25 works fine. Telnet 127.0.0.1 3050 does not.

So, nothing answers on port 3050.
In domu, "netcat -lv -p 3050 -s 127.0.0.1".
- if this gives "Address already in use", then Firebird, or something,
is listening. Problem is then Firebird, opensuse firewall, or the
"something" that is already listening.

Otherwise,in another session of domu, "telnet 127.0.0.1 3050".
Maybe you see "Escape character is '^]'." .......

I pretty sure we (the Firebird folks) have narrowed this down to a permissions issue. So I will try to track that down. If that isn't it, then I will be back to see if there is some other Xen specific thing going on here.

Thanks for everyone's patients.
