It's cool: I've been doing open source work and patches since, sheesh. The publication of GNU-tar and gzip? I just try to let amateurs start with a working system and work back, rather than expecting them to get it right from the start, so they can learn from a good working model rather than deriving too many lessons from scratch and maybe mislearning some of them.

Integrating things into a .deb or .rpm is very useful to learn about package management, as well as building software.
