More documentation is almost always a good idea.

I totally agree!

I think it's good to have the single variables for commodity, and have
the "extra" where anybody experienced and with special needs can put
arbitrary stuff in.
When it's documented and explained from which vars the final command
line is constructed in the end, everyody can use it for their simple
and advanced setups knowing what happens exactly,
