Sure? this looks more like xen tells you what it is compiled for.
A working HVM with intel cpu gives the message "VMX ON DONE" in xm dmesg.

But, when not having hvm support at all,  xen should exit quite fast
and give a message saying so when you try to start a hvm domain.

But if I start the guest using the above config file "xm" doesn't return
to the shell and the is no output to /var/log/xen. "xm list" says it is
running but I cannot ping it...

Maybe the network is just broken - can you access the graphical
console with vnc?

XM not returning (at least for quiute some time) is also sometimes
happening when xen has problems to connect virtual nics or block
devices. Is there anything in the xen-hotplug.log?


Ah, when looking at your config: i think the "cdrom" config parameter
isn't correct anymore in xen 3.0.3 - cdroms are also put into the disk
configf variable - see the hvm example config to get it right .
