How long did you wait for "xendomains stop" to shut down your domUs?  This 
morning I thought that it hung again during shutdown, but I deliberately 
waited for an unusual amount of time (around 5 minutes I believe, maybe more) 
and it did complete successfully.  This was the first time I tried waiting so 
long, while there was no disk activity or other clues that the system was not 
in an endless loop.

Too bad I never tried this with the default Suse installation...
