FYI: Recently my dated, apic-less i386 laptop started to successfully
     boot the pv_ops/dom0 kernel, all the way up to userspace.

Do you get a vga console?  Can you start domains?

x86-32 booting to usermode dom0, but only with serial console and domain creation fails (SIGBUS in the domain builder, so I'm hoping its related to the hvm qemu crash).
