FYI: Recently my dated, apic-less i386 laptop started to successfully
boot the pv_ops/dom0 kernel, all the way up to userspace.

How recently? I know there was a fix in the first half of last week relating to smp mtrr that got one of my machines working, but the problem I am having wasn't fixed by that.
