  • Thread-topic: Exporting SCSI Tape devices to HVM DomU

We are currently using VMWare Server (with Debian as the host) to
perform a restore test service to clients. Basically we take one of
their recent backups, and restore it into a VMWare VM to confirm that
their backup will produce a working system on restore.

VMWare allows exporting the tape drive device into the VM, and so
something like the Veritas Backup Exec IDR (Intelligent Disaster
Recovery - you build a CD beforehand and just boot that in the event of
a disaster and it asks for the most recent tape and rebuilds the system)
"just works". There are some very minor problems with going from a
physical system to a virtual system, but the process works well. After
we have restored the system we then provide access (remote or local as
required) to the client for them to confirm that everything looks okay.

Is exporting SCSI "generic" devices (eg tapes, scanners, cd burners,
etc) on the Xen roadmap at all? I'm pretty sure it isn't supported
currently but please correct me if I'm wrong!

Thanks

James
