[Xen-bugs] [Bug 1442] New: domU pv_ops 2.6.28.x/2.6.29.x not booting on some Intel XEON CPUs

http://bugzilla.xensource.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=1442

Summary: domU pv_ops 2.6.28.x/2.6.29.x not booting on some Intel
                    XEON CPUs
           Product: Xen
           Version: unstable
          Platform: x86-64
        OS/Version: Linux-2.6
            Status: NEW
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P2
         Component: Hardware Support
        AssignedTo: xen-bugs@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
        ReportedBy: tycoonog@xxxxxx

Hello,

i have a strange problem.

I have some identical(!) servers:
HW:
- Intel Xeon 5405
- Supermicro X7DCL-i Mainboard (rev 1.1a, bios 1.1a)
- 24GB DDR2 ecc registered
- completely same hardware

SW:
- Debian Lenny
- XEN 3.3.1, 2.6.18.x dom0 (from hg source xen.org)
- compiled from source from xen.org

DomU Kernel pv_ops:
- 2.6.27.21
- 2.6.28.9
- 2.6.29.1
- compiled from vanilla kernel

The hardware and software are identical.

ONLY the CPU versions is different. They are all same Intel XEON 5405 CPUs, but
one is a "stepping 6", the other are "stepping 10".

Problem:
domU pv_ops Kernel 2.6.28.x and 2.6.29.x are only booting on "stepping 6" Intel
XEON 5405.
On "stepping 10" domU pv_ops Kernel 2.6.28.x and 2.6.29.x are NOT booting, the
domU hangs at "Starting testdomU", after you start it with xm create -c
testdomu.sxp. xm top shows 100% cpu load in this state.

domU pv_ops 2.6.27.x is working an ALL Intel XEOn 5405 steppings.

I have now tested 3-4 days, bios options are the same, hardware is the same,
software is the same, the ONLY thing i have found is the CPU stepping.

Can you help me ? Do you need more information ?

-Eduard
