Ah, this leads me to my next ?

Do VMs need exclusive access to disk or can I have a common space on the dom0 with multiple domUs accessing it via phy mechanism?

Not via PHY – it’s a block device just like any other – multiple simultaneous accesses will corrupt the device unless you have something like DRBD in place.  Probably easier is just an NFS mount.

And even then be careful of more than one VM having write access to a file or you'll end up with a mess. There are many conversations here on the Xen lists about how to do this. It's not an uncommon thing to want multiple VMs booting and running off one source location.
