  Did you change xvda to xvda1 in all cases? 
Including in the /etc/fstab. 
  Yups. I changed in /mnt/etc/fstab and generated initrd Then I copied this initrd to /mnt/boot and modified my config file to accommodate xvda1 and  the new initrd. Unmounted the image from /mnt and gave it a whirl. 
Still same issue..
  I'll try the link. It looks promising..
  Another idea.. Can I get dmesg logs for the guest kernel?

Maybe some hints here:

(they use sda1 for example)
