I have tried the following:

In my config file:
---
extra = 'xencons=tty'
---

and in /etc/inittab:
---
1:2345:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty
---

The result is, the following boot message:
---
Starting periodic command scheduler: crond.
INIT: Id "1" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
INIT: no more processes left in this runlevel
---

So it is definitely a problem in one or both of these parameters: the
extra and inittab.
