i think most installers can respect an existing partition scheme.  if
not, they should soon, since most integrators are realizing that
installing an OS doesn't mean owning the whole hardware
Agreed. It makes snapshotting and backup of the mountable filesystems one heck of a lot easier to manage, without the vagaries of having to interpret the disk images internal file structure.
