Actually there ARE crossover cables for gigabit ethernet.

"Normal" referencing to cables having 2 switched, 2 straight pairs... Yes.

But sometimes you want a cable that you can use with 10, 100 or 1000 MBit.
Then use a 4 switched pairs cross-over cable.
