My recommendation is: Install a very simple minimalistic VM using the OS 
installation media as method to install (accepting most defaults). Then take 
this 
image and template to clone more VMs. Then confugure/add software to the VMs. 
That 
seems the easiest way to go. Getting the first VM up and runnnig is the hardest 
part. Also install available updates before you try.
