RE: [Xen-devel] Use paravirtualized kernel with HVM-image?
It's similar to what Jun Nakajima proposed as hybrid virtualization:

However it's not a simple replace-with-pv-kernel action, since pv
kernel and unmodified linux kernel expects different low level interfaces
