I don't think that compilation is the main issue discussed. Porting is a
good example where loadables modules are useful... assuming that not all
platforms support all of Xen features.
Keeping track of what happen in this list for a while and I can
definitely say that there is a "feature contention" around :)
A modular approach can be a great improvement IMHO.
