It was noticed last week that xm-test no longer built because the mirror used for gcc has fallen off the map. In the process of fixing that I also
fixed a couple of the make targets to ensure multiple patches can be
applied, and make clean doesn't wipe out directories controlled under hg
(which would be very bad form).
