Same happens here with xen-3.2 from ubuntu 8.04 packages.

Using linux-image-2.6.24-18-xen gives:
BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address

Using linux-image-2.6.24-19-xen gives:
BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 11s

It always happens on a xen-create-image (etch) while downloading/installing the
packages.

The machine is running without problems using the default ubuntu kernel even
under heavy io load (eg writing DVB-C stream to sata disk).
