Using tap:aio in the vm config file produces:
Error: Device 51713 (vbd) could not be connected. Hotplug scripts not working.
OS is debian etch kernel 2.6.18
xen version 3.1 pre build binary package from the download section
(same problem with the source release)
blktapctrl gets loaded:

mounting the image file manually works:
xm block-attach 0 tap:qcow:<FILENAME> /dev/xvda1 w 0
mount /dev/xvda1 /mnt/disk
