xmexample.hvm  gives as an example for a disk storage device 
#disk = [ 'phy:hda1,hda1,r' ]

however in hvm mode, full path to the physical disk device must be given like 

#disk = [ 'phy:/dev/hda1,hda1,r' ]

without full path you get the error 'could not open hard disk image hda1' in
the qemu-dm.log
