Summary: Ubuntu Dapper install cd fails to boot in HVM (unknown
opcode)
Product: Xen
Version: unspecified
Platform: x86-64
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
Severity: major
Priority: P3
Component: HVM
AssignedTo: xen-bugs@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
ReportedBy: jclemens@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
I suspect the VTX emulation code is missing something needed by Ubuntu Dapper's
install ISO. When you try and boot from the server install iso, you get a blank
screen and this is 'xm dmesg':
Booting from CD-Rom...
Unknown opcode at 4004:153B=0x4157B
Halt called from %eip 0xD37FA
this happend with both xen-3.0.3 and xen 3.0.4 binary tarballs (community)
This is with the ubuntu-6.06.1-server-amd64.iso available at:
http://ubuntu-releases.cs.umn.edu//6.06/ubuntu-6.06.1-server-amd64.iso
It also fails for ubuntu 6.10 ISOs. I have not been able to test this on an
AMD machine to see if SVN does any better.
Interestingly, the mini netboot iso available here works fine:
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/dapper/main/installer-amd64/20051026ubuntu35/images/netboot/mini.iso
To reproduce, just grab one of those isos and try booting from the cdrom image.
