        OS/Version: Linux

          Severity: blocker
          Priority: P2
         Component: Guest-OS
        AssignedTo: xen-bugs@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
        ReportedBy: linuxale@xxxxxxxxx

Hi dear,
I'v a blocked problem on initial install of xen Guest Machine (DOM0 boot OK).

I'm using a gentoo distro with linux-2.6.12.6-xen-r2 and xen-3.0.1-r1 .
I followed this point to configure xen:
# DOMAIN 0
XEN --->
  [*] Privileged Guest (domain 0)
  [*]  Block-device backend driver
  [*]  Network-device backend driver
  [ ] Block-device frontend driver
  [ ] Network-device frontend driver
  [ ]   Piplined transmitter (DANGEROUS)
  [*] Scrub memory before freeing it to Xen
      Processor Type (X86)  --->

Device Drivers --->
  Networking support --->
    Networking options --->
      [*] 802.1d Ethernet Bridging

make all
cp vmlinuz /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.x.y-xen0

## EDIT grub.conf
title  Xen 3.0.0 / Linux 2.6.12.5
root   (hd0,0)
kernel /xen.gz dom0_mem=98304
module /vmlinuz-2.6.12.5-xen0 root=/dev/md2

# DOMAIN U
XEN --->
  [ ] Privileged Guest (domain 0)
  [ ]  Block-device backend driver
  [ ]  Network-device backend driver
  [*] Block-device frontend driver
  [*] Network-device frontend driver
  [ ]   Piplined transmitter (DANGEROUS)
  [*] Scrub memory before freeing it to Xen
      Processor Type (X86)  --->

make all
cp vmlinuz /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.x.y-xenU

To try I used first of all ttylinux
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/xen/ttylinux-xen.bz2?download

# Edit the file /etc/xen/ttylinux
kernel = "/boot/vmlinuz-2.6-xenU"
memory = 64
name = "ttylinux"
nics = 1
ip = "1.2.3.4"
disk = ['file:/path/to/ttylinux/rootfs,sda1,w']
root = "/dev/sda1 ro"

With no success and then I try with a good document on debian
http://wiki.xensource.com/xenwiki/DebianDomU.

No success at all!
Fail with:
[65636.560724] VFS: Cannot open root device "hdb5" or unknown-block(3,69)
[65636.561452] Please append a correct "root=" boot option
[65636.561816] Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on
unknown-
block(3,69)

Looking the log I'v noted that in the guest machine xen don't recognize well the
ide controller:
