The tweak I applied to the FreeBSD 6.0 IDE driver was to recognise the 
ICH7 as different from the ICH5 (the driver treated ICH6 and ICH7 as the 
same as ICH5 in this regard) and scan the secondary IDE channel for drives.

As noted in the bug report, the x86_64 OS on the Xen testcd recognises 
the CDROM. I'll try booting a couple of Linux LiveCDs (Gentoo and 
Knoppix) when I'm back in the office in about 9 hours.
