You definitely can't have a pool of XCP 1.0 and XCP 0.5 hosts - all sorts of
things will break. You've just got a bizarre error message as a result of the
configuration not being supported.
You should definitely be able to upgrade a pool to 1.0 without VM downtime
though - check out the docs for XenServer upgrade and follow the process
described there. Essentially, you upgrade the master first, followed by each
slave, migrating VMs between them.
