One strange thing I notice is when I do file on the kernels I get as below

snomdom0:/boot# file vmlinuz-2.6.*
vmlinuz-2.6.18.8:       gzip compressed data, from Unix, last modified: Mon Nov  1 23:28:02 2010, max compression
vmlinuz-2.6.26-2-amd64: Linux kernel x86 boot executable RO-rootFS, root_dev 0x900, swap_dev 0x1, Normal VGA

And no I have installed a 64 bit Linux and also compiled from the same system.

Are you trying to boot a 64 bit kernel on a 32 bit system?

Thanks,
Todd
