i tried an 'make mrproper' followed by a 'make oldconfig' with the 
downloaded config file (this is linux-2.6.32-xen-r1; the config file was 
a 2.6.31-xen-r11):

Did you forget to use "ax"/"aw" in a .S file?
Note that for example <linux/init.h> contains
section definitions for use in .S files.

  LD      .tmp_vmlinux1

That is what happened before also. But i keep trying.
