1) That way you're not sending the mail to the mailing list, and...
2) No, you're not creating any kernel at all. It's only the hypervisor (xen build target) and the tools like xm (tools build target).

I thought your wish is to build the dom0 kernel yourself?!

You can just leave out the kernel build target, making only the hypervisor
and the tools:

make xen
make install-xen
make tools
make install-tools

Is there any way to do that?
