Tried both tty and dev/tty...it error'd out with the below messages. 

xm create -c ./guest1.conf vmid=1

Error: name 'tty' is not defined

 xm create -c ./guest1.conf vmid=1

        xencons=/dev/tty

xm list

Try adding xencons=tty to the guest config file
