OK. But what about when you have the iso downloaded on a local disc?
surely this should be fine too?

Absolute path to the directory which contains the isos wouldn't work for paravirtualized installation. You have to loop back mount the whole isos, copy the contents to a directory and share the directory using nfs/http/ftp and specify nfs/http/ftp url as the installation source. See some details at.
