with tg3, bnx2, 3c59x is not necessary.
i think that it is not necessary at all, if you use xen > 3.0.2.
in 3.0.2 there was an upper limit in MTU, in both front and back driver.

there is also a patch (find my post).
BTW, changing MTU to 1492 is not IMHO a good way to workaround.
