you can compile the guest kernel for i386, and i have some faint memories
about turning off runtime optimisations; but i wouldn't be surprised if there
are some extra 'tunings' that happen at boottime when it detects
an 'advanced' CPU.
also, several libraries select optimised code at application launcthime, (most
media codecs, for instance)
