Actually, I fixed it. I'm using a dell 1950 with a broadcom card. It required a firmware update found on this wiki http://mywiki.ncsa.uiuc.edu/wiki/Dell_PE1950_NIC_Firmware_Workaround
after that everything worked fine! Only took me a week to figure it out.
