Re: [Xen-users] Memory limit

I am evaluating XEN to see if we might be able to use it in place of

I booted the demo CD under Vmware ESX and it worked fine. Xen guests
under Vmware….
From the specs, I see there is a 4GB limit. Is that limit per domain,
for all guests, or for the entire server? Right now our vmware servers
are dual CPU Xeons with 12-16GB of ram each, running about 15 guests.
Is there an estimate when the 64 bit version will be released, and if
it will support a mix of 32 and 64 bit, or will it all have to be 64
bit? (I don’t have any 64-bit hardware yet, but…)
It was originally intended that >4GB machines (entire server) only would
be supported on 64bit machines. However, a handful of people have been
working on incorporating PAE extensions to allow this on 32 bit x86. See
http://lists.xensource.com/archives/html/xen-devel/2005-05/msg00660.html
and do a search on the list for pae for additional info.
The 64 bit support is in the latest unstable tree, and is supposed to be
stable when xen 3.0 is released. Only 64 bit guests are slated to be
supported (at least initially) but a linux distros with 64 bit kernels
can run 32bit apps without a problem.
